The hockey gods were definitely smiling on the Shaw Park ice rink Saturday as the first ever Breakaway Winter Classic went on without a hitch. Despite temperatures in the mid 60's and full sunshine all day, the open air outdoor ice surface was in fine condition come the 9:00 PM game time. With the stage set for Sam Alton's legendary group Full Throttle to take on the hometown favorite Fighting Amish, the puck was dropped and the game began in a blur. Both teams had plenty of chances throughout the first; a defensive battle this was not to be, yet only Alton's team was able to capitalize holding a 3 goal lead at the end of the period. The second period saw the Amish begin to fight back however they remained unable to close the gap, giving no ground but still behind by 3 going into the final 15 minutes. The third period saw the teams trade goals twice before the Amish made their move closing to within a one with just over 4 minutes left to play. In the blink of an eye Alton's team dashed the Amish dreams, scoring 3 times to capture the Crystal Cup with an impressive 11-7 victory. Alton himself was named Player of the Game with two goals and two helpers.
